Maybe more so, because everything here is true." ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM is streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy and Magnolia Selects. The Seattle Times said "Gibney's documentary is ultimately not about business and numbers but about morality how a group of people, blinded by money, lost their souls." While the LA Times said "It's a chilling, completely fascinating documentary that reveals the face of unregulated greed in a way that's every bit as terrifying as Lon Chaney's unmasking in The Phantom of the Opera. The film is a concise, entertaining documentary about the spectacular failure of Enron. In a hyper-competitive environment, Enron traders resort to all kinds of underhanded dealings in order to make money at any cost and keep their high-paying jobs. The company is linked with several illegal schemes, including instigating the California energy crisis as a way to drive up utility prices at the expense of the average American. ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM explores the fall of the Enron Corporation, arguably the most shocking example of modern corporate corruption. While no one has linked Enron to the current crisis, it is hard to believe that the greed Enron personified did not in some way contribute to what has happened to Texas' energy grid. The heartbreaking situation in Texas reminded us of Alex Gibney's 2005 Oscar-nominated documentary ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM.
